If you know me, you know I am a hoarder of textiles. I have boxes and boxes of different fabrics stacked up. Lately, I have felt I am not doing enough textile work and so, to kill two birds with one stone, I have decided to set myself the challenge of a collage a day. Of course, that does not mean that I will have a quilted and embellished collage every day. Basically I intent to just play with fabrics for 15 to 30 minutes every day to make a background or foundation. Another plus of this challenge is that I will also be building up a library of foundations to inspire me and I will also be learning about design and composition and colour combinations.
So, here is my first collage.
This one is quite large and complicated and took considerably longer than half an hour. It is about two and a half times larger than the size I intend to use most days.
you might find it amusing that my inspiration for this collage came from a piece of baby wipe I had used to wipe up my palette when painting. You can see some of it on the right hand side second large piece from the top, about the middle. i love the way these pieces of rubbish take on colour and texture and have quite a collection. This collage actually has a motif, the seahorses, which are modeling paste on a piece of brocade, but they have been sitting in my collage box for ages. Unless I happen to find something in my junk box when I am putting together a collage, I probably won't add any motifs, but let them marinate until the muse strikes.
This collage uses a variety of fabrics, from lace, to leather, baby wipes, satin, silk, chiffon, organza, furnishing fabric and lots more - except, I don't think there is any quilting fabric
This process is something I love doing, so I hopefully will be able to keep it up for a long while. I don't intend to post these every day, but once or twice a week. Let's see if I can keep it up!
Happy creating!
